Ohio man shot by cop ID'd; police say he had assault rifle

Posted: Updated:

AKRON, Ohio (AP) - Authorities have identified a northeast Ohio man who was fatally shot by an officer after police say he pulled an assault rifle from his car.

The Summit County Medical Examiner says 61-year-old Philip B. Hasan was shot in the chest Sunday afternoon in a parking lot outside the Akron apartment building where he lived.

Police say officers went to the complex after a caller said his neighbor had slammed the caller's arm in a car door during an argument.

Police say Hasan reached for an assault rifle as officers approached him in the parking lot. They say Hasan ignored orders to stop, and one officer fired several times.

The officer has been placed on paid administrative leave. The shooting remains under investigation.
