YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -

Youngstown Police will accompany the fire department on calls until whoever shot a city firefighter Monday night is captured, according to Fire Chief John O'Neill.

Someone fired two shots at a fire truck as it was returning from a fire on the 2100 block of Elm Street at around 11:30 p.m.

Chief O'Neill tells 21 News that one of the rounds went through the coat of a firefighter without injuring him. The other bullet struck another firefighter in the right calf.

Police tell O'Neill that they believe that his firefighters were targeted.

“It's unnerving,” said O'Neill. “It's very rare that we are targeted. Youngstown Police will stay with us until the shooter is caught.”

Chief O'Neill says the victim, whose name has not been released, is talkative and seems to be in good shape. As of 5 a.m. Tuesday doctors at St. Elizabeth Hospital were trying to determine if the firefighter would need surgery.

According to police, the shooter was in the driveway of a home on Halleck Street and began firing shots at the truck that was driving by. Police believe the shooter used a rifle.

A Mercedes SUV was seen in the area and police are actively looking for that vehicle.
