CHICAGO -

The Youngstown State softball team's bid for its second Horizon League Championship and NCAA Regional Tournament berth came up short after a 6-3 loss to UIC in the tournament title game on Saturday afternoon at Flames Field.

The Penguins finish the 2017 season with an overall record of 31-28 and earned their second runner-up finish since 2013. The 31 wins are the second most in school history

Seniors Sarah Dowd and Maria Lacatena, junior Cali Mikovich and freshman Maddi Lusk were named to the 2017 Horizon League All-Tournament.

UIC jumped out to a 5-0 lead after scoring one in the first, three in the third and one more in the fourth.

Mikovich who went 2-for-3, laced a one-out double to right-center field and scored on Lacatena's two out double to right to cut the lead to 5-1.

The Flames answered with a run in the bottom half of the frame on a two-out single by Lexi Watts.

Youngstown State made a late surge in the top of the seventh. Mikovich triple to right field and score on Brittney Moffatt's ground out to first. Lacatena belted a solo home run to cut the lead in half, 6-3, but the Penguins could not get any closer.

Lacatena went 3-for-3 with two RBIs while Mikovich doubled and tripled and scored two runs for the Penguins.
