Valley crackdown results in OVI and drug arrests

Posted: Updated:
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -

The Ohio State Highway Patrol has joined forces with the Mahoning County Sheriff's Department and Youngstown Police Department after several fatal accidents this year.

Troopers headed up an effort to crack down on impaired drivers in the city.

In Mahoning County there have been six traffic fatalities this year, with 5 of those in Youngstown.

Taking impaired drivers off the road as well as drugs was one of the goals of the saturation enforcement.

Sgt. Eric Brown with Ohio State Highway Patrol allowed 21 News Reporter Caroline Collins to accompany him on patrol along roadways looking for any signs of impaired drivers.

It only took Sgt. Brown about 10 minutes to pull someone over after he noticed the car ran through a stop sign. The driver got off with a warning.

Moments after pulling into a parking lot to watch drivers, the trooper saw someone speeding down Belmont Avenue.

After failing a series of impairment tests including walking a straight line and a field sobriety test, Sgt. Brown arrested the driver, 48-year-old Edward Phenizee of Pittsburgh.

Sgt. Brown reached into the drivers pocket and found  marijuana. He also found open bottles of alcohol in his car.

Phenizee is  being charged with an OVI, speeding, possession of marijuana and driving without a seat belt.

As of 11 p.m. Friday, troopers made three drug arrests, 1 felony warrant arrest, two OVI arrests, and issued several seat belt tickets

Those taking part in effort made a total of 70 traffic stops.
