A Boardman woman is charged with child endangering after police found her 11-year-old son duct taped to a chair in a basement.
Susan Malysa, 32, was arrested Monday afternoon at the Boardman YMCA where police went looking for her after finding her son at their Roche Way home.
Police say the seventh grade student's legs were duct taped to the chair, his hands were duct taped and he had tape covering his mouth.
According to the report, the boy had a bruise on his face and neck, and he was shaking.
Although the boy told police he hadn't been there long, he was taken by ambulance to Akron Children's hospital.
The child was discovered by his grandmother, who told police she had received a call from her daughter who said she was taking her six year old daughter swimming at the YMCA.
The grandmother tells police she suspected that her grandson wasn't going with his mother, so the grandmother went to the Roche Way home to check on the welfare of the boy.
When she found him taped to the chair, the grandmother called police who arrived and took pictures as evidence.
The grandmother told police that when she suspected that her grandson was being abused in the past, she made an appointment with a Poland School counselor. But she says her daughter arrived at the school before her and would not allow the counselor to speak to her son without being present, according to the report.
The grandmother told police that the boy has some behavioral issues, but attends boy scouts and is otherwise a “perfect child”.
The grandmother told police that she believes her grandson may have been responsible for causing the bruise on his face.
A Boardman police report says they investigated in April of last year when the boy claimed he was being disciplined by being struck with a hammer. A search of court records could turn up no charges filed in connection with that investigation.
After police arrested the child's mother, she was booked into the Mahoning County jail awaiting arraignment in county court on Tuesday.
A case worker from Mahoning County Children's Services was called to make arrangements for care of the two children.
