Akron Children's to relocate specialty services to Boardman campus

Posted: Updated:

Families of patients at Akron Children's Hospital Mahoning Valley soon will no longer have to drive all over Boardman to receive care.

"We really wanted to bring all of our services to one location so they could see their doctor, get any tests needed without getting in and out of the car and getting their extra treatment that is required," said Lisa Taafe with Akron Children's Hospital Mahoning Valley.

In July, the hospital system will relocate primary care offices and more than a dozen of its sub-specialty services; including allergy, cardiology, neonatology, and orthopedics to a new, 51,000 square feet expansion.

Akron Children's is also adding a sports rehabilitation department to the Boardman campus.

"We have a ton of great student-athletes in the Valley, more sports injuries occurring and we did not have a dedicated sports rehab for those patients at this time, strictly pediatrics sports rehab.  So, we wanted to be sure we could incorporate that in the new construction," said

Akron Children's anticipates serving 250 pediatric patients each day and designed the new space to connect with them.

"When you really get an idea of what a child sees when they go into a facility and you can then accommodate that so you are seeing what lessens their anxiety and makes them really appreciate coming to a non-institutional environment, again we all win," said President William Considine with Akron Children's Hospital.
