Pregnant woman overdoses, charged with assault on baby

Posted: Updated:

EAST BUTLER, Pa. (AP) - A Pennsylvania woman who overdosed on opioids while pregnant and had to undergo a cesarean section is being charged with assault on her unborn child.

Authorities say 30-year-old Kasey Dischman was roughly seven months pregnant when she overdosed last Thursday in a home in East Butler, about 40 miles north of Pittsburgh. Her baby girl was delivered through by C-section and is in critical condition and has been placed on life support.

It was unclear when Dischman, who police say is on a ventilator, would be released from the hospital.

Some states have laws that allow pregnant women caught using drugs to be charged with assaulting their unborn children.
