Muscle Connection H.S. Football Preview: Ursuline Irish

Posted: Updated:

The old saying is, "To be the best, you have to play the best."

Ursuline football Coach Larry Kempe wouldn't have it any other way. The Irish play Cleveland Benedictine, Akron Hoban, Massillon and Warren Harding, and that's just in the first half of the season.

"With the schedule we play, you just can't turn the ball over and we did that a lot last season," said Kempe.  The Irish were minus 12 in the turnover margin last year and finished 3-7.

They have 65 players with six returners each on offense and defense and the goal, according to Kempe, "is to play with a lot of confidence and making sure we take care of the football."
Kempe, known for his defense, feels that side of the ball will determine the fortunes of his team, "We have some kids, but it's going to be sprinkled in with some hopeful surprises. I think we have 18 linemen and you need to play five, but you have to find some backups."

Kempe is counting Nick Petro, David Simon and Jason Bell to lead the way on the offensive line.

It appears Jared Fabry has the inside track at the quarterback spot, but
competition is coming from Bobby Cavalier and transfer Glen Griswold.

The Irish have 19 seniors.
