WARREN, Ohio -

It took veteran coach Jeff Bayuk 35 years to win a state football championship.  He has seven months to figure out how to defend it.

"We're not going to sneak up on anybody, we know that, " said Bayuk.

Bayuk has 45 players, which is up from last season. "The kids coming back are bound to carry on the tradition here. We know everyone is gunning for us, but we're gunning for them as well."

The Eagles return five starters on offense led by quarterback Greg Valent and offensive lineman Chris Urchek.  But that's not all, some key personnel return from that championship team; Alex Hernandez is on the o-line, Thomas Yanevich at safety and Hyland Burton at wide receiver.

"We have a lot of other spots to fill," Bayuk said

Even as the defending champions, Bayuk feels no added pressure. "To be able to win 25 games in two years, including a regional championship a state championship, in my opinion, that makes you loose."

The veteran coach says he;s approaching this season just like his previous 34 in coaching. "We're not thinking about anything beyond the first week. We know the reason we've had success the last couple of years is because we concentrated and focused on one opponent at a time."

The Eagles open the season Thursday, August 24 at Champion.

It's believed it's the first Thursday regular season game Warren JFK in history.
