Austintown Kmart closing after the holidays

Posted: Updated:
AUSTINTOWN TWP., Ohio -

The Kmart store in Austintown is included on the list of stores that will close early after the first of the year.

Sears Holdings announced on Thursday that it plans to close 18 Sears and 45 Kmart stores, including the Kmart on Mahoning Avenue in Austintown.

Four other Kmart stores in Ohio and four in Pennsylvania are on the list.

Three Sears stores in Pennsylvania will also close. None of the Sears stores in Ohio are on the list.

Kmart operates stores in Niles, East Liverpool, Ohio, as well as Hermitage and New Castle, Pennsylvania.

The stores are expected to close in late January but will remain open during the holiday season, with liquidations sales slated to start on November 9.

The closures of unprofitable stores come as part of what corporate officials are calling “ a strategic assessment of the productivity” and an effort “to right size our store footprint in number and size”.

Sears Holdings says it continues to transform its business model to balance the need for brick and mortar stores and digital sales.

Sears Holdings says in a statement that eligible employees impacted by the closings will receive severance and will have the opportunity to apply for open positions at area Kmart or Sears stores.
