Duct taping of son sends Boardman mother to prison

BOARDMAN TWP., Ohio -
She made headlines this summer when she duct taped her young son to a chair in the basement.
Thirty-two year old Susan Malysa was arrested June 6th when her 11 year old son was found duct taped to a metal chair in her basement, while she and another child were at the YMCA swimming. She later pleaded guilty to one charge of felony child endangerment.
She appeared Tuesday for sentencing before Judge R. Scott Krichbaum. He told Malysa that he wouldn't do to his dog what she did to her son.
"This causes me to wonder if you don't need some professional help because i can't even begin to imagine someone doing something like this to a child," the judge said.
Malysa's son did read a statement in court in which he alleged other instances of abuse by his mother, but judge Krichbaum explained that no other charges are before him and by law he can only consider the duct taping incident that she is charged with.
Prior to sentencing Malysa told the judge that she made a big mistake, but that she loves her children. "I love my kids with everything, like my whole heart everything, and I just want to apologize to them and to you," she said.
The judge told her that what she did was not love.
"This is conduct that will not be tolerated in our society and i do wish to make an example of you in that regard," Krichbaum said.
Judge Krichbaum then sentenced Malysa to nine months in the state penitentiary, more than four times the 60 days the prosecution was asking for. Her children are now in the care of their grandmother and the boy is receiving counseling.
