Police: Arsonist bragged 'I did it' as he watched fatal fire

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Police say witnesses told them the suspect in a house fire that killed a 4-year-old girl and two women stood around as the structure burned, bragging that he set the blaze.

Pittsburgh police believe 41-year-old Martell Smith set the fire early Wednesday after getting into a bar fight with a relative of the victims, who also lived at the home.

Smith is charged with three counts of homicide, along with arson and drug charges. A 26-year-old woman who was with him was also taken into custody.

Police say a witness overheard Smith muttering "yep, yep, I did it," while fire crews battled the fire.

Police say Smith and the woman reeked of gasoline when they were taken into custody.

It wasn't known Thursday if either one has retained an attorney who could comment on the accusations.
