AUSTINTOWN TWP., Ohio - Police in two Mahoning County communities are trying to find out if the same couple is victimizing people who are trying to sell phones and other valuables through a classified ad app.
A 23-year-old man from Farrell told police that after advertising to sell his Apple iPhone 7 for $455 on the Letgo app, he agreed to meet a prospective buyer in the Austintown Walmart Parking lot on Wednesday.
According to the victim, the “buyer” handed him the money and asked to inspect the phone.
After he handed the phone over, that's when the “buyer” sped away in his car.
It wasn't until then that the victim realized that he had been given counterfeit money.
Police say there are two suspects in their 30s.
One is a white male with facial hair, driving a 2006 blue or black Pontiac Grand Prix. He was accompanied by a black female.
Austintown Police say the Milton Police department is investigating a similar report with suspects fitting the same descriptions.
Five days earlier Austintown Police stopped two people with similar descriptions in a dark green 2008 Pontiac.
A search of the car turned up eleven fake $100 bills and five phony $50 bills.
The driver of the car told the officer, “I sold my Playstation and some guy gave me fake money.”
According to the police report, the driver turned the counterfeit cash over to the officer saying that he wasn't concerned because he couldn't spend it.
Police have the names of the driver and his companion from that traffic stop and are continuing their investigation.
