YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -

Lofexidine Hydrochloride, also referred to as the brand name Lucemyra, is now FDA Approved.

This is the first nonopioid treatment to ease withdrawal from quitting the use of addictive opioids.

The medicine is only approved to treat adults with withdrawal symptoms for up to 14 days.

"They can feel flu-like symptoms, very upset stomach, nausea, and just generally not feel well for a week or two and it can be very intense,"
stated Dr. Daniel Brown of Meridian Health.

"Which is why patients may often not be able to go through the process without being an inpatient. So hopefully this new medication will help them be able to go through the process easier, and with less medication," Dr. Brown continued.

The medication is not on the market yet.

The cost of the medicine has not been released.
