SALEM, Ohio - The Columbiana County Coroner and Salem police are investigating the death of a man who was struck by a train Wednesday night.

According to Detective Dave Talbert, 62-year-old Frank Leasure of Carrollton, Ohio was struck by the Norfolk Southern train at the New Garden Avenue crossing just before midnight.

Talbert says it appears that Leasure, who was a maintenance worker at the American Standard plant, had waited for a westbound train to pass before crossing the tracks.

Police say Leasure walked between the lowered crossing gates, but apparently did not see the oncoming eastbound train and was struck.

Detective Talbert said it is not uncommon for people to wait several minutes for a train to pass as they cross from a parking lot to the plant.

According to police, Leasure had only worked at American Standard for a short time.

Police plan to review video from the train's camera as they continue to investigate.
