BMW announces recall on 45,000 vehicles

Posted: Updated:

BMW of North America has announced a recall on nearly 45,000 vehicles.

According to documents, the engine and the engine's cooling system are the reason for the recall.  More specifically, vehicles equipped with an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) module with an integrated cooler are mentioned in the recall.

The EGR cooler can leak internally which causes coolants to mix with diesel engine soot which increases the temperature and can increase the risk of a fire.

Vehicles included in the recall:
2013-2018 BMW 328d and 328d xDrive
2014-2018 328d Sports Wagon and 328d xDrive Sports Wagon
2014-2016 535d and 535d xDrive
2015 740Ld xDrive
2015-2017 X3 xDrive28d SAV and 2014-2017 X5 xDrive35d SAV

BMW says that owners of affected vehicles will be notified and dealers will have inspections and replace the EGR cooler if necessary.  BMW will also replace the engine intake if a leak has previously occurred.  All repairs will be free.

The recall is expected to begin on December 17.
