YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -

We all know the story of how the Grinch tried but failed to steal Christmas. Well, there's a police officer who kept a Grinch from stealing Christmas from a child in Youngstown.

Brian Koeppen and his wife Sara were disheartened last week when surveillance video showed a man grabbing a delivered package from the porch of their South Side home and walking away.

Inside that package was a Hotwheels set meant for their son.

When they called the Youngstown Police Department, officer Joe Wess arrived to find out what happened.

Officer Wess not only took the information for his report but went above and beyond the call of duty.

Wess returned to the Koeppen's home on Wednesday bearing a gift.

It was a Hotwheels set that the officer had purchased with his own money according to Brian Koeppen's Facebook post.

“He said the image of that guy taking my kids toy practically haunted him and he could not sleep thinking how that guy was smiling about what he had just done in stealing the package,” wrote the grateful father about Officer Wess.

Koeppen, who had posted a video of the package being taken, was happy to post a video of the police officer's act of kindness.

“There are still great people that care for others in the cold world we are living in,” writes Koeppen. “Thanks again, Officer Joe Wess. The world needs more people like you in it!”

21 News spoke with Officer Wess who said, "It just doesn't sit well with me. People aren't fortunate enough to be rich in the city and they work and it was just taken from them in seconds."

The family says the gift was for their two sons.
