MAHONING COUNTY, Ohio - A new survey shows that fewer Americans say they will celebrate Valentine's Day, but those who say they will plan on spending more to mark the day of love.

The most recent consumer survey by the National Retail Federation shows that only 51 percent of American say they plan to celebrate Valentine's Day. Down from 55 percent last year.

It also found that people are looking for new gift ideas, such as giving an experience. A sweet deal package from the Hampton Inn and Eastwood Mall offers a package of shopping, dining, and a room.

"If they like to go shopping and maybe do an overnight stay, it's something a little out of the ordinary," said Eastwood Mall spokesman Joe Bell.

The NRF survey found that average spending for Valentine's Day this year will be about $162 dollars, up from $143 last year. And total spending is expected to top $20 billion.

One thing that is among the more popular gifts is a day of pampering at a spa/salon.

"We have a lot of guys who come in and say this is what she looks forward to every year," said Sarah Medvec, at Casal's de' Spa & Salon in Canfield.

A manicure, pedicure, massage, a spa day is just a day for relaxing.  "Coming to get this done, it's an experience that typically a lot of people don't do for themselves," said Ashley Johnson with Casal's.

At Something New in Canfield, they offer a lot of what's new, but say for many people traditional is still a favorite.

"The traditional dozen red roses is still the number one request," said Anna Howells from Something New.

One last survey number shows that men will outspend women by more than double for Valentine's Day.
