Each Ohio county would receive $1.6 M under proposed gas tax hike
If Ohio lawmakers approve the 18 cents per gallon gas tax increase by July it would mean another $1.6 million in funding for each county in the state.
If Ohio lawmakers approve the 18 cents per gallon gas tax increase by July, it would mean another $1.6 million in funding for each county in the state.
Ohio Department of Transportation Director Jack Marchbanks told the Ohio House Finance Committee Thursday that revenue raised in the first year would amount to roughly $1.2 billion and will be split between ODOT and local governments.
ODOT receives roughly 60% of that funding, and local governments get about 40% for the construction, reconstruction, maintenance, and repair of highways and bridges.
In fiscal year 2020, ODOT says the proposal will provide them with $750 million additional dollars in revenue to pave roads, fix guardrails, fill potholes, clear snow and ice, maintain bridges, and improve safety.
Below is an estimated breakdown of how increasing the current 28 cent gas tax by 18 cents would benefit local transportation funding in the year 2020.
