Trumbull County Metroparks one step closer to completing bike path

Trumbull county, Ohio -

With summer approaching bike enthusiasts are ready to hit the trails and in Trumbull County the fourth and final phase of what’s called the “Western Reserve Greenway" bike trail is one step closer to completion.

The goal is more than 75 miles of bike trail, spanning through four counties and connecting Lake Erie to the Ohio River. The trail will be called the Great Ohio Lake-to-River Greenway.

Trumbull County is now working on 4th and final phase of their portion of the project.

"It will put us on rival with the Towpath Trail, you know, that goes from Cleveland down to New Philly. So, you know, doing this, hopefully some of those riders, doing those long distances and getting along our trail, coming into our restaurants," said Zachary Szette, Trumbull County Metroparks Executive Director.

Those interested in weighing in on the route of Trumbull County's final phase were invited to a public meeting Thursday night. The final leg will run about 3.5 miles between Burton Street in Warren and SR 169 in Niles.

Officials had hoped to run the trail along railway, but couldn't acquire the property.

"We would love to do it that way. That's certainly the easiest and safest way to go, but unfortunately we don't have the money to do that," said Councilman John Brown Jr.

The $3.2 million route is mainly funded through state and federal grant dollars.

The proposed route will go through some industrial areas and in Niles through some light traffic, city streets. For Brian Erwin and his son, the trail will be very close to their home on Hunter Avenue, near Smith Street.

"Convenient for our kids around here to hop on the trail just a few hundred feet way," said Erwin.

Construction on the final Trumbull county phase is expected to wrap up in 2022.

Trumbull County Metroparks is accepting comments regarding the project's design and social, economic and environmental impacts on residences, businesses and the community until May 21st. Comments can be submitted to:
