Excavator tips during Garfield School demolition

Posted: Updated:
WARREN, Ohio -

The demolition of a nearly century-old school building in Niles didn't go off without a hitch.

Pictures sent to the WFMJ Today Facebook page show an excavator tipped over at the former Garfield Elementary School on Third Street.

Niles Mayor Steve Mientkiewicz tells 21 News that one of the machine's treads sunk into a hole under a pile of rubble Tuesday afternoon.

The mayor says the Trumbull County Engineer, which owns the excavator, brought in another piece of equipment to right the excavator and the work continued.

No one was injured according to the mayor.

Mientkiewicz says the school has been a problem for the south side neighborhood for the past 13 years.

People would dump mattresses, garbage, and other debris inside the building, posing a health hazard.
