AUSTINTOWN, Ohio - Greenwood Chevrolet in Austintown unveiled a new Chevy Camaro for the D.A.R.E. program for schools this afternoon.
It's a program that has its roots in bullying, Internet safety, drug and alcohol diversion, and good decision-making, and it has proved to be successful in areas like Austintown.
But things have changed since D.A.R.E. was founded in 1983.
In the 2000s, the Drug Abuse Resistance Education focused less on drugs and more on smart decision making, but now a far bigger problem looms. With dangerous drugs like opioids, heroin, fentanyl and more, officers say the D.A.R.E. program has to continue to expand.
"Between over the counter prescription drugs, and the heroin and fentanyl, they are getting some education through our program," said David Potkonicky, a D.A.R.E. officer from Austintown. "It's no longer just a program to say no to drugs. It's about, 'Hey, these are good decision-making skills, and we're going to give you those life lessons and social skills.'"
The vehicle represents the third vehicle, since 2001, that Greenwood Chevrolet has helped fund and customize for the Austintown Police Department in support of the D.A.R.E. program.
The Camaro features the seal of the Austintown Police Department, emergency response lights, and is a fully-functional vehicle designed for local law enforcement use.
"It is our pleasure and privilege to have played a role in delivering another vehicle to the brave men and women who serve on our local Austintown Police Department," said Greg Greenwood, owner/operator of Greenwood Chevrolet. "We proudly have gone the extra mile to support the D.A.R.E. program, and hope this vehicle drives more awareness and education to help prevent our community's kids and teenagers from the dangers that come from substance abuse."
