Giant Jesus statue placed along I-76 in Milton Township

Posted: Updated:
MILTON TOWNSHIP, Ohio -

If you're traveling on Interstate 76 east-bound, near Milton Township -- look up!  You might not see it at first but, He's there.

"I never even noticed it before until I was sitting here for lunch and I look up and there it is," said Truck Driver Brad Metts of Akron.

The ten foot Jesus statue sits 75 feet above ground and is located just off the exit to State Route 534. And some of the people who live and work in the township aren't quite sure whose responsible for putting it there.

"Word on the street that I got is somebody had bought a church and this was found in a storage facility and next thing you know it's up," said Mechanic Michael Jones at  Auto Truck Services, Inc.

It turns out the owner of the piece of property is Troy Carrocce and he is also the one responsible for placing the giant Jesus along the interstate.

Carrocce did not want to speak on on camera but, said the statue used to sit above St. Michael's Church in Newton Falls. He said the statue is more than 30 years old and came from Italy.

When Carrocce purchased St. Michael's, he said the statue was broken and did not have an arm. He had the statue repaired and decided it needed to be placed where it could reach more people.

He tells 21 News: "This statue is not an image, rather it is a reminder to those who pass by, that Jesus said with open arms, "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."

St. Michael's is in the process of being sold.
