Chief lobbies Mathews schools to hire resource officer from Vienna PD

Posted: Updated:
VIENNA TWP., Ohio -

Vienna Township Police Chief Bob Ludt is lobbying the Mathews Board of Education to hire a member of his department as a school resource officer.

Ludt tells 21 News that the school board is scheduled to vote tonight on hiring a Trumbull County Sheriff's Deputy as a resource officer, instead of renewing a contract with the Vienna Police Department to provide the service.

In a letter to the board of education, Ludt claims that hiring a deputy as a resource officer will cost the district twice as much as it would to pay $15 per hour to a Vienna Police Officer.

"It doesn't make sense when the district is trying to watch the spending of tax dollars," Ludt told 21 News.

Asked if he believes that the board's actions may be guided by the actions of former Mathews School Resource Officer Mike Sheehy who faces charges for allegedly stealing rifles from the police department, Chief Ludt pointed out that Sheehy is no longer an officer with his department. "How long are we going to beat this dead horse?" asked Ludt.

The school board is scheduled to meet at 6 pm on Wednesday in the high school cafeteria.
