CANFIELD, Ohio - Agriculture is a significant industry in Mahoning County.

"We actually have diverse agriculture here in the county. From the big orchards we have to the fruit and vegetable operations," said Eric Barrett, Extension Educator with the Ohio State University Mahoning County Extension Office.

At the Canfield Fair, agriculture is on full display. From garden hobbyists to beekeepers and even buildings displaying the latest innovations for farming.

"You won't necessarily see hemp yet, but that's something that may be a commodity in the near future as we continue our research on that kind of agriculture," Barrett said.

So what do you think the biggest challenge is for farmers in 2019, especially here locally?

"All of the weather challenges we have seen over the past few years are going to become more normal. So at the state level, we are doing a lot of work with farmers on how you deal with climate extremes," Barrett said.

George Less has been working the agriculture building for 35 years. He has seen fruit and vegetable farm displays shrink each year; something he blames on lack of labor and ease of importing the products. He adds that local fruit and vegetable farmers are having to adapt to keep their farms. "As far as the apples, they have a lot of different strains of trees, they're smaller, but they'll produce more, a real better quality of fruit," Less said.
