Sydney Canty is a native Detroit-er and left the Motor City to join the 21 News team as a reporter in September of 2020.

Sydney covers everything from politics to crime, but likes the crime beat most.

Sydney feels she can connect with the families of crime victims, and to her, they’re more than just stories - but a way to extend a helping hand to a hurting community during the most challenging moments of their lives.

Less than two years into her career, Sydney was promoted to anchor WFMJ Weekend Today. You can watch her on Saturdays and Sundays from 8:00 to 10:30.

Sydney has a deep passion for journalism that she discovered in college, when she would seek out and shoot stories on her own, using just an iPhone. She’d also edit them herself. One such story featured an interview with Governor Gretchen Whitmer, who attended a peace march in Detroit in honor of George Floyd.

She graduated from Wayne State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism in 2019.

Sydney also interned at WDET Radio for one semester in Detroit.

When she's not busy gathering news, Sydney enjoys spending time in church or with friends and loved ones. She also loves to eat lots of things; pasta dishes make her especially happy!
