Struthers received $332,600 in funds for the Elm Street Safety Upgrade Project, which will transform Elm Street by resurfacing the roadway and replacing cracked, broken and hazardous sidewalks.

ODOT's Transportation Alternative Program provided a $200,000 grant that will allow the city to improve pedestrian traffic by replacing sidewalks that are cracked or displaced by tree roots, and uprooting trees causing displacement.

Another $132,600 will go towards resurfacing Elm Street. These funds are from the Eastgate Regional Council of Governments.

"In addition to strengthening the pedestrian network in the city, the Elm Street Safety Upgrade Project will encourage non-vehicular transit and promote healthy living," said Mayor Cercone Miller.

The project will create more accessible routes for pedestrians between the downtown and community areas. Areas that will be linked include the high school campus and sports complex, new fire station, City Hall, library, post office and downtown area.

Construction is set to begin in July 2023.

The city has applied for $150,000 more in grant funding through the Ohio Public Works Commission.
