1998: Mayor George M. McKelvey points to the latest young victims of drug wars in Youngstown as four reasons why President Clinton and his drug czar should intervene on the city's behalf against gun violence.
By a 314-16 vote, members of United Nurses of America voted to end their strike and accept a union contract with Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital. Some nurses will return immediately, others as the patient count increases.

Stores in Boardman, Liberty, and Austintown and plunder the Cabbage Patch displays. Extra police were on duty to maintain order, and no serious incidents were reported. One Hills clerk didn't understand the attraction: "If you gave birth to something that looked like that, you'd drown it," she joked.

A 15-year-old Niles youth is arrested for making obscene phone calls to telephone operators at the Niles Bank Co. The calls were traced to Edison Junior High School and an East Side home.
Cardinal Mooney's Ted Bell is named "Back of the Year" in Northeastern Ohio by the Associated Press. Coach Don Bucci, who led the team to the state AAA championship, is named Coach of the Year.
1948: Dollar Savings & Trust Co. of Youngstown purchases the Hubbard Banking Co., which has a deposit of $3 million. Dollar has deposits of $67 million.
Youngstown Mayor Charles P. Henderson will ask the Federal Power Commission in Washington to give the Youngstown area more gas next winter to avert serious shortages.
Seven more downtown Youngstown stores announce they will observe Monday night shopping hours during the Christmas season, joining 56 stores that announced expanded hours a week earlier.
