State Representative Lauren McNally introduced a bill to designate part of State Route 170 in New Middletown as "Police Chief Ronnie Rickets Sr. Memorial Highway."

Ricketts was a New Middletown Police Department officer for 25 years, including a five-month stint as interim police chief.

Chief Ricketts died on April 2, 1997, in a car accident while on duty delivering court papers at the age of 55.

Rep. McNally's office was contacted by Chief Rickett's brother Larry with a resolution of support from the New Middletown mayor and council members asking to name the mile portion of the road after him.

"Chief Ricketts was an invaluable member of a small community, whose passing was felt heavily by his family and neighbors," said Rep. McNally. "I am humbled that they've shared his story of service with me and trusted me to do the work to make this naming a reality. It is an honor."

If the bill is signed into law, markers will be placed along the portion of State Route 170 near mile marker 5.
