Sharon Police have charged the mother of a three-month-old boy after doctors say he was the victim of shaken baby syndrome, allegedly causing broken ribs, a fractured skull, cardiac arrest, and a brain bleed.

Twenty-five-year-old Brittany Arnold has been charged with child endangering and aggravated assault.

Arnold told police she called 9-1-1 on Saturday, April 6, after finding her infant son pale and breathing unusually while checking on him following a nap.

Officers performed CPR until the child was taken to Sharon Regional Hospital and placed on a breathing machine.

The baby remained on a breathing machine after being transferred to UPMC Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh where doctors reported bruising and blood around a swollen brain and “significant signs of physical abuse”.

Doctors also reported fractured ribs, very little brain activity, and seizures according to a criminal complaint filed by police.

"This child has been the victim of violent physical abuse," one doctor reported. “The diagnostic presentation is consistent with an event of shaking followed by respiratory into cardiac arrest."

The complaint from the Police reported that as of Tuesday, the child was doing better when it came to breathing on his own. However, the doctor reported that it is hard to say the type of quality of life the baby will have in the future due to the severe damage to his brain.

As of Friday, no court hearing had been scheduled for Arnold. Court employees tell 21 News there is an active warrant out for her arrest.
