East Liverpool man jailed on $1M bond in suspected 'love triangle' fatal shooting
EAST LIVERPOOL, Ohio - An East Liverpool man has been charged with murder following a fatal shooting Thursday evening near a school.
According to court records, Daniel Clayton Whitley, 33, of East Liverpool, is accused of fatally shooting James Powell on Thursday.
A complaint filed in East Liverpool Municipal Court by a police detective states that officers responded to the area of Montrose and Eutaw streets on Thursday to investigate a report of shots fired. The complaint alleges that Whitley fatally shot Powell.

East Liverpool Police Chief John Lane told reporters that the shooting is believed to have stemmed from a love triangle involving the suspect, the victim, and a woman with whom they both had a relationship.
Chief Lane said that the suspect fled the scene but was later apprehended hiding under the porch of a nearby residence. He was taken into custody for questioning just after 9:30 p.m. Thursday.
Whitley, whose address is listed in court records as 402 Wilbert Ave., East Liverpool, was arraigned Friday at 8:30 a.m. in Columbiana County Municipal Court. His bond was set at $1 million.
The incident occurred around 7 p.m. near East Liverpool High School, prompting the evacuation of school buildings as a precaution.
Police indicated that they do not believe this was an active shooter situation and that there is no ongoing threat to the public.
