Full week of events planned for 'Ohio Nonviolence Week' in Youngstown

YOUNGSTOWN Mahoning Valley Sojourn to the Past is inviting the community to participate in the 2025 Ohio Nonviolence Week, planned for October 5 through October 11, 2025.
Several events have been planned to celebrate the week.
In addition, all throughout the week, the community is invited to "Chalk the Walk" by chalking messages of nonviolence and peace on sidewalks to recognize Ohio Nonviolence Week 2025.
Sunday, October 5
Beginning at 3 p.m., the 15th annual nonviolence parade and rally will take place. The parade will begin on Wick Avenue and Wood Street.
A rally will follow at the Youngstown Foundation Amphitheater, located at 201 South Phelps Street.
Monday, October 6
Beginning at 5 p.m., Flambeau's will be hosting a "Mingle with Minni" Sojourn to the Past fundraiser.
The event, located at 2308 Market Street, will feature dinner for $25 and the opportunity to speak to Minnijean Brown Trickey, one of the teenagers from the "Little Rock Nine" group.
Tuesday, October 7
The Tyler History Center, located at 325 West Federal Street, will be the backdrop to the 2025 Simeon Booker Award for Courage Ceremony.
Reception for the event begins at 5:30 p.m., and tickets are on sale for $35.
The ceremony will begin at 7 p.m., and is free and open to the public.
Keynote speaker and national Award for Courage recipient, Jo Ann Bland, and local Award for Courage recipients, Gary and Cindy Koerth, will be in attendance at this event.
Wednesday, October 8
A free art and poetry reception will be held at The Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County, located at 305 Wick Avenue, beginning at 5 p.m.
Thursday, October 9
There will be spoken word poetry, formulated by seventh graders through 12th graders at St. John's Episcopal Church from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Friday, October 10
A 5 Day Reading Challenge discussion panel and light luncheon will be taking place beginning at noon at the YWCA, located at 25 West Rayen Avenue.
The free event will feature several speakers, including Goodwill Community Solutions Director Carol Holmes Chambers, social activist and Minister Shane Russo and YAJF Social Action Chair Samie Winick.
Minnijean Brown Trickey will also appear as a special guest during the event.

Also on Friday will be "Art of Emotion" from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Jewish Community Center of Youngstown, located at 505 Gypsy Lane.
Saturday, October 11
To finish off the festivities of Ohio Nonviolence Week, there will be a nonviolence dialogue event at 1 p.m. at Unitarian Universalist Church, 1105 Elm Street in Youngstown.
The event centers around one question: "How can we be voices for nonviolence and peace in the Mahoning Valley?"
