YOUNGSTOWN - Police in Youngstown are investigating after a vehicle was disabled on I-680 after being shot at with an automatic rifle, according to a police report.

According to the report, police were called to I-680 southbound near the Shirley Road exit shortly before 2:30 p.m. Tuesday for reports of gunfire.

Police spoke with a victim, who told officers he was driving southbound on I-680 when a white SUV he recognized from the gas station he had just been at was following him.

The man told police that as he passed the South Avenue exit, a man came out of the sunroof and started shooting at his vehicle with an automatic rifle.

Police say the vehicle was struck four to five times, with one round going through the lower windshield, two going through the hood and one to two going through the front grill and bumper.

According to police, the man's vehicle was disabled on the Shirley Road exit because one of the rounds struck the engine block.

According to the report, police were unable to find any spent casings at the Shirley Road exit. Police also spoke with an employee at the gas station the man had mentioned, but the employee did not have access to security video.
