US-224 congested, accidents more likely
It's that time of year where the shops down route 224 are full of people getting last minute gifts and naturally congesting the roads.
On Tuesday afternoon, two cars collided at Midlothian Boulevard and Market Street in Boardman. No one was hurt.
Shoppers witnessed accidents themselves.
"We saw couple yesterday there was like one by the Southern Park Mall and then there was one by the Shell gas station down there but just a big reminder to be careful when you're driving out in this traffic," Jacob Latessa of Boardman said.
Ohio State Highway Patrol Sergeant Jeremy Kindler warns against distracted driving. He said phones are becoming the number one reason behind crashes.
Troopers on motorcycles had to intervene on route 224 back in September.
"I've seen like near two or three accidents. I know I saw one on Shields just a few weeks ago and then just one down here on Lockwood just today," Benjamin Uehlinger of Boardman, said.
Statistics from the Ohio State Highway Patrol's website show there were more than 600 crashes on Rt 224 this year alone - Outnumbering all the other routes.
Kindler said heavy traffic was a contributing factor.
"It's always risky, there's a lot going on here. There's a lot of stores, it's a compressed area, makes sense," Michael Yakim of Boardman said.
Shoppers urge motorists to drive safely.
"Just avoid 224, Market street OR South Avenue all you can. It's just, it's been very busy. people are aggressive," Uehlinger said.
"Slow down for God's sake. None of us want our insurance premiums to go up anymore and to be honest be generous to each other this is the season of mercy after all," Yakim said.
OSP also said to be mindful while you're on the road and to really watch for pedestrians crossing and shopping.
