Salvation Army receives donation of two gold coins, nearly $9K value

An anonymous donor has donated two gold coins valued at nearly $9,000 on the very last day of the Salvation Army's Red Kettle campaign, according to County Coordinator, Major Herb Rader.
On Wednesday, December 24, Rader confirmed with 21 News that on the last day of the Salvation Army's Red Kettle campaign, an anonymous donor had dropped two gold coins into the kettle stand set up at the Walgeen's in Poland, located at 30 West McKinley Way.
These coins, pictured above, each weigh one ounce, according to Rader.
With the current price of gold per ounce being listed at $4,496.60 on the APMEX website, that would make the value of both coins combined just under $9,000.
Rader says that the value of the coins together is 8% of the entire campaign goal.
Additionally, Rader told 21 News that he has never seen this type of donation in his history with the Salvation Army, but has seen other locations receive similar donations.
"So it's quite huge, and we didn't know if we were going to get it. Historically, they've gotten it. And so it's sort of been a bit of an adventure looking for it along the way, and we never saw it. And so, you know, to come on the last day was kind of exciting," said Rader.
The 2025 Red Kettle campaign began on November 8.
The total amount that the Salvation Army has raised over the course of the campaign has not yet been released at this time.
"We appreciate the generosity of the donor and also the fun spirit in which the gift was given," Rader told 21 News.
