Retired YPD Detective announces candidacy for Seventh District Appeals Court Judge

A retired Youngstown Police Department (YPD) detective announced Tuesday February 3, that he will be running for Judge for the Seventh District Court of Appeals on the Republican ticket.
Donald Scott retired from serving at the YPD after 30 years. During that ceremony, he was presented with a plaque for his services.
In addition to serving at the police department, Detective-Sergeant Scott served in the U.S. Army and worked as a federal law enforcement officer. He retired as an Army Lieutenant Colonel and served on temporary duty in Afghanistan.
In 2023, Scott was inducted into the Ohio Veterans' Hall of Fame, an award that recognizes the accomplishments and achievements of servicemembers.
In a news release outlining Scott's candidacy, one of the reasons he attributes to wanting to run for judge includes his lifetime of service.
Scott has been an active attorney for 18 years and holds a Doctor of Law and Policy, which he says provides both the practical and scholarly foundation of an appellate judge.
Another reason Scott states that he wants to run for judge is to serve the community through the wishes of the people, not the interests of corporations.
"For years, big utilities, such as FirstEnergy, hand in hand with big oil interests, have financed Ohio's political machines," Scott said.
Scott continued," They own the statehouse, and now they want to own the courthouse... Ohio does not need judges shaped by powerful industry interests. Ohio needs judges who will follow the Constitution and apply the law fairly, without favor to political or financial power."
If appointed to serve, Scott says he would serve as a full-time judge and decide cases strictly according to law.
"Our courts are not for sale," said Scott.
He continued," And I'm running to make sure they never are."
The Seventh District Court of Appeals covers eight Ohio counties, including:
- Belmont
- Carroll
- Columbiana
- Harrison
- Jefferson
- Mahoning
- Monroe
- Noble
Scott officially filed his petitions on Tuesday at the Mahoning County Board of Elections.
