Local bands face off to win festival spot

Several local bands went head to head Friday night, all looking to score a spot in April's Federal Frenzy festival lineup.
Westside Bowl hosted the battle of the bands but the audience picked the winner. With each performance came cheers from the crowd — which was the currency they needed most, in order to win the battle.
The six featured bands in the Federal Frenzy Faceoff each had 20 minutes to perform their sets of original music. The lineup included Brake Fluid, Doomsday Darling, SJ the Artisan, Zoloft, Drifting Thing and the Future Ghosts and Mo Turk. Each band brought its own variety of musical influences ranging from psychedelic indie horn rock to pop and hip hop to reggae and funk.
The free show and faceoff was sponsored by Youngstown State University and presented by Penguin Productions, the campus promotion organization for students. A shuttle bus was also in operation through the evening to get students to Westside Bowl and back to campus.
The winner is guaranteed a place in the Federal Frenzy festival lineup coming up in April.
