A safety improvement project on Interstate 80 in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, has restarted.

According to a news release from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), the final phase of a safety improvement project that impacts five miles of Interstate 80 has restarted.

The safety project is located in East Lackawannock Township and Lackawannock Township.

As part of the project, flashing warning devices and signs, along with minor guard rail updates along the eastbound lanes of the roadway, have begun being installed.

Some of this work may disrupt traffic with lane restrictions and shoulder closures.

Portions of the project were completed in 2025, including:

  • Asphalt and concrete paving patches
  • Grooving of concrete to prevent skidding

The final phase of the project is now expected to finish in the early months of 2026.

Traffic disruptions to any of Pennsylvania's roadways can be found on the 511PA website.
