A Canfield man is scheduled for a court hearing on Wednesday morning after state wildlife officials accused him of illegally killing two antlered deer on the same day.

William Orville Hewitt, 54, faces a charge in Columbiana County Municipal Court following an investigation by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

According to court records, a state wildlife officer received information that Hewitt claimed to have harvested two antlered white-tailed deer late last year. The officer checked the state's licensing system and found records for two eight-point deer checked in about two hours apart that morning.

Ohio law allows hunters to take only one antlered deer per license year, regardless of where they are hunting or what equipment they use. State regulations define an antlered deer as any deer with at least one antler three inches long or longer.

Hewitt is charged with a third-degree misdemeanor for violating wildlife rules. If he is found guilty, he could face a fine or other penalties determined by the court.

The arraignment is set for 8:30 a.m. in Lisbon.
