Trumbull County Commissioners approve EMA relocation project

During a Trumbull County Commissioners meeting on Wednesday, February 11, a relocation and improvement project that impacts the Trumbull County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) was approved and accepted.
The recommendation began with Trumbull County EMA Director John Hickey, who says that the relocation is sought to allow the agency to occupy its own space.
Since the Trumbull Regional Medical Center closed its doors in early 2025, the Trumbull County Coroner has been operating out of the Trumbull County EMA's garage.
Additionally, Hickey says that they have been lending and sharing their base of operations to other departments as well.
The future location of the Trumbull County EMA would be the former Bazetta Township Fire Station, located at 773 Everett Hull Road in Cortland.
Hickey told 21 News that this building was sold to the county in 2019 after the fire brigade there moved to another building. Since then, it has sat vacant.
Improvements to the building are needed, Hickey says, but they won't be major changes and be largely cosmetic.
Hickey continues, stating that the new facility would be beneficial and would include:
- More bay vehicle space
- A command port
- Trumbull County hazmat
- Classroom spaces, which may be utilized for other community departments and organizations
- Access to the Trumbull County fairgrounds, in the event of a large, county-wide emergency
Furthermore, Hickeye says that the space would be an expansion of the center and would move the Trumbull County EMA to a centrally located area in the county.
An official timeline is unknown as of this decision, as the vote for which company will conduct the renovations still has to be put to a bid.
Hickey says he has a personal goal of having the project completed and the Trumbull County EMA moved by September 1, 2026.
Separately, the Trumbull County Commissioners are considering a proposal to move the Trumbull County 911 dispatch center into the county health department building in Cortland.
