SALEM - The Columbiana County Humane Society is investigating after a loose domesticated fox was found in Salem Township earlier this week.

According to a Facebook post by the Humane Society, humane agents were first alerted to the fox's presence on Monday, February 9, but they did not immediately intervene because they believed it to be a wild animal.

However, that changed when several more calls came in the following day, noting that the fox had an active Apple AirTag, indicating that it was domesticated. Eventually, a Salem Township resident called to report the fox on her front porch.

Shelter Manager Fabian Pike tells 21 News the home was near the corner of State Route 45 and Salem Grange Road.

When humane agents went to the home to trap the fox, it bit volunteer Stacy Priddy as she attempted to control it. Another humane agent assisted in trapping the fox and tending to Priddy's wounds.

Priddy, who has experience with exotic animals, says she is vaccinated against rabies, and she believes the fox to be vaccinated, as well. She went on to say that while the bite was less than ideal, it's part of the job and she's dealt with much worse.

As for the fox, it is safe at the Humane Society's wildlife center and will not need to be euthanized. Pike says both the fox and Priddy will need to quarantine for 10 days as a precautionary measure due to the bite.

Pike tells 21 News he has not tracked down the owner of the fox yet, but when he does, he will get in contact with them and ask why the fox was running at large.
