A gas odor on Youngstown's westside has led to multiple residents submitting complaints to Enbridge Gas Ohio, but the company says natural gas may not be the culprit.

Residents along North Osborn, Mahoning and Oakwood Avenues have reported a consistent smell of gas in their neighborhoods in recent weeks. Enbridge Gas Ohio told 21 News that their crews have responded to the complaints and walked the area with "specialized equipment" as well as investigated Enbridge facilities but have not detected natural gas.

This comes after the company repaired a residential service line on North Osborn Avenue on January 1, following an odor complaint.

Residents in the area told 21 News that they have smelled an odor similar to sulfur and lasts from early morning through the night.

"Yesterday it was hitting really hard and I was checking if there was a gas leak in my house. Checking the knobs and everything because it was really strong. And it's still happening, it hasn't gone away," one resident said.

The resident added that the smell comes in short waves or bursts.

Enbridge attributed the odor to local industrial facilities and wind patterns shifting the smell toward the neighborhood at times.

"We have periodically received similar outside odor reports in this area that do not result in the detection of natural gas. Shifting wind patterns near a local industrial wastewater treatment and oil recycling facility may carry odors that resemble the smell of natural gas," Enbridge stated.

As a precaution, the gas company advises residents to leave an area immediately if they smell a rotten egg-like odor, as it could be natural gas. Those in the area of the smell should not smoke, use any electric switches or start or stop nearby vehicles or things that may spark.
