NEW CASTLE, Pa. - A New Castle resident shot a man who allegedly broke into his home early Monday morning, according to local authorities.

New Castle police officers arrived at a home in the 1600 block of South Jefferson Street just after 6 a.m. following reports of a burglary. The person who called 911 told dispatchers that an intruder had entered the house and was shot by the owner.

When officers entered the home, they found a male suspect with a gunshot wound to his left leg. Police provided medical help to the man before he was taken to a hospital in Youngstown for treatment.

The condition of the suspect has not been released. Authorities said the investigation into the shooting and the reported burglary is still active.
