Poland and Struthers teachers among literacy award winners

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio Lottery has named 10 educators as the latest recipients of the Science of Reading Awards. The group includes Lori Moncilovich of Poland Seminary High School and Kevin Dalley of Struthers High School.
The awards are part of the Ohio Lottery’s Giving Back program. This initiative recognizes teachers who have completed the state’s professional development program for the Science of Reading. The method of instruction uses research to understand how students learn to read and why some children have difficulty with the process.
The state training focuses on teaching specific skills. These include phonics, vocabulary, and reading fluency. Research shows these methods help students become more capable readers.
The Ohio Lottery will honor 30 teachers in total through this program. The lottery selects winners through a random drawing of all educators who have finished the training. Each winner receives a $250 gift card to buy classroom supplies and literacy materials.
"These teachers show incredible dedication to evidence-based instruction," said Danielle Frizzi-Babb, Ohio Lottery communications director.
Other winners in this round include teachers from Hilliard, Shadyside, Canal Fulton, Akron, Harrison, North Royalton, Columbus, and Cedarville. The lottery previously selected 10 winners in November 2025 and plans to announce the final 10 recipients in April.
