TRUMBULL COUNTY, OH - A Champion bridge may soon undergo routine repairs ahead of schedule, as the Trumbull County Planning Commission prepares for the area's future including a new emergency center being built on the other side.

Mercy Health broke ground on a 30,000-square-foot emergency and imaging center in Champion back in August of 2025. The facility is set to be completed in late 2026 or early 2027. In a January Facebook post, Mercy Health said progress was being made on the site of the new Champion Emergency Center in Warren.

The bridge, located near Educational Highway, will lead drivers directly to the new emergency center. Nic Coggins, chairman of the commission, said the bridge would have been due for routine maintenance in roughly five years. Although nothing is drastically wrong with the bridge now, Coggins told 21 News that by conducting the routine repairs now, the bridge will be up to date on maintenance before the Mercy Health facility opens, ensuring easy access to the emergency center.

Repairs are contingent, however, on receiving a line of grant funding that the county is eligible for, Coggins added. If approved for the funding, repairs would start in June and be completed as close to the start of the school year as possible, in order to avoid rerouting or delaying school buses.
