BOARDMAN - Deep Freeze Skating Club in Boardman is hosting a Skate-A-Thon event to help alleviate financial challenges.

With rising costs needed to operate, community clubs like Deep Freeze are in jeopardy of closure.

The Skate-A-Thon aims to raise money to keep the club open and keep athletes on the ice while also helping nearby charities.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit Project MKC, a non-profit organization based in Boardman that helps provide children and their families with essentials and individual needs.

Deep Freeze Skating Club Board Member Erik Anderson says a donor will be giving the club a $10,000 matching grant from the event.

"We're working really hard to achieve all that match. The more that we raise, the more we'll be able to make this affordable and the more we'll be able to give back to the community," Anderson said.

The Skate-A-Thon will take place on Sunday, February 22, at 6:00 p.m. at the Deep Freeze Ice Arena. It will feature skating, music, a basket raffle, and more.

Deep Freeze Skating Club, located at 360 McClurg Road in Boardman, has been operating for nearly 30 years, and offers programs such as youth figure skating development, competitions and exhibitions, Theater on Ice performances, and community shows and events.
