New Castle caretaker found guilty of neglecting patient who died from seizure

NEW CASTLE, Pa. - A caretaker from New Castle was found guilty of neglecting a patient, causing her to suffer a fatal seizure.
According to the Pennsylvania Attorney General's Office, 50-year-old Kelly Gonzales was convicted of felony charges of neglect of a care-dependent person and endangering the welfare of a care-dependent person.
Gonzales was an administrator at a personal care home in New Castle. Part of her duties was to make sure residents received their medications in a timely manner.
One patient was prescribed an anti-seizure medication. According to the AG's Office, Gonzales knew the prescription had run out, but never renewed it or instructed anyone else to do so.
That patient died from a seizure after not receiving her medication for over 10 days.
"Those who make the commitment to care for our most vulnerable residents take on a serious responsibility, and [Gonzales's] failure to fulfill that duty was catastrophic. Perhaps what is most tragic about this case is that the loss of life was preventable," said Attorney General Dave Sunday in a press release.
Gonzales is set for sentencing on May 21.
