The Ohio School Social Work Association has selected a Youngstown State alumnus to receive the 2026 Friend of School Social Work award.

The award honors an individual who is not currently a practicing School Social worker, but still works to make an impact on Ohio students and families.

Christine Hanysh, the Director of Social Services at the Educational Service Center (ESC) of Eastern Ohio, was chosen for her support of the contributions School Social Workers make to their communities. The ESC cited her dedication to social services and support for school-based mental health and family-centered programming as a driving factor in her receiving the award.

Superintendent Traci Hostetler said Hanysh's leadership has made a "profound impact" on the students and communities she serves.

"She understands that strong social-emotional supports are foundational to student success, and she works tirelessly to ensure our school social workers and service teams have the resources, collaboration and encouragement they need to make a difference every day," Hostetler said.

Board President Richard S. Scarsella also commended Hanysh's commitment and service to social work.

"Her dedication to advocacy, partnership and innovation has strengthened our organization and improved outcomes for countless children and families. This recognition by OSSWA is both well-earned and well-deserved," Scarsella said.

Hanysh will be formally recognized at the OSSWA Annual Conference on March 6.
