Just weeks after a retired Youngstown Police Department (YPD) detective announced his candidacy for the Seventh District Appeals Court judge, he withdrew from the May primary.

Donald Scott, who was set to run on the Republican ticket after an announcement in early February, retired from serving at the YPD after 30 years. Scott is also an Army veteran and former federal law enforcement officer.

"After careful consideration and discussing this matter with both Columbiana County Chairman Dave Johnson and Mahoning County Chairman Tom McCabe, it is best in the interest of the community and for party unity," Scott stated in a news release.

While the release goes on to state that Scott plans to stay engaged and work alongside the community, he recognizes the support he was given.

"Your support has meant more than I can express. Together, we elevated important conversations and worked toward a vision rooted in service and community," Scott stated. "Although I will no longer be a candidate, my commitment to the issues that inspired this campaign remains unchanged."

Previously, Scott stated that "Ohio does not need judges shaped by powerful industry interests. Ohio needs judges who will follow the Constitution and apply the law fairly, without favor to political or financial power."

He also said that this decision is what he feels is best for the community and the local Republican party.

Scott has been an active attorney for 18 years and holds a Doctor of Law and Policy.
