The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is set to implement restrictions on some interstates ahead of the forecast for Tuesday, March 3.

The Storm Tracker 21 team anticipates that Mercer County could see some light rain throughout the day, with some slick spots early in the morning due to late Monday night freezing rain.

In response, PennDOT is prepared to implement vehicle restrictions for some roadways and pretreat roads with salt brine, a mixture of water and salt, on roads without salt residue from previous storms.

The following Tier 1 restriction is planned to go into effect at 3 a.m. on Tuesday:

  • Interstate 80 from Interstate 79 to Exit 173
  • The entire length of Interstate 99

Furthermore, the following Tier 1 restriction is planned to go into effect at 6 a.m. on Tuesday:

  • Interstate 80 from Exit 173 to the New Jersey border
  • Interstate 81 from Interstate 78 to the New York border
  • The entire length of Interstate 84
  • Interstate 180 from Interstate 80 to U.S. 220
  • The entire length of Interstate 380
  • U.S. 322 from Interstate 99 to Interstate 81

Under Tier 1 restrictions, tractors without trailers, tractors with unloaded or lightly loaded trailers, passenger vehicles towing trailers, recreational vehicles and motorhomes, motorcycles, school buses and other commercial vehicles cannot travel on the impacted roadway.

Any commercial vehicle not impacted by the restriction must also move to the right lane.
